The Franklin Bulls are pumped to announce the re-signing of Waiuku guard Payton Hughes for the 2026 Sal’s NBL season.

A proud local product with deep roots in the Franklin basketball community, Hughes returns for a 5th consecutive campaign after starring in the last two Sal’s NBL seasons with the Bulls. The 5’11” sharp-shooter first burst onto the scene through the Waiuku Raptors club and the Franklin Basketball Academy in 2022, quickly establishing himself as one of the region’s most reliable scorers.

Hughes has been a fan favourite at the Franklin Pool & Leisure Centre in Pukekohe, where his quick release and ability to knock down shots from anywhere on the floor lit up Rapid League games last season, averaging 41.8% from behind the arc making him the second best three point shooter in the Rapid League. His journey through the Bulls’ development pathway includes standout performances with the U20 Men’s team and Franklin Men’s Tupu side.

“Payton is the definition of a local lad and someone who has been committed to the Franklin development pathway. He’s worked incredibly hard to earn his spot in the Sal’s NBL and continues to push himself every single day. Having that homegrown talent and shooting threat back in our lineup is huge for us as we build toward another strong season.” Says GM Jamie Reddish

"Payton has been with our club for years and has shown consistent improvement over his time with us. An elite shooter with great work habits, Payton is a huge asset for our club. We are excited for him to spend another season with the Bulls!" Head Coach Dan Ryan

Hughes' signing is an example of the continued belief the Club has in the Franklin, South Auckland and North Waikato local talent. Payton coaches juniors through the Tuakau Bullets local club, illustrates his commitment to the local community.
